Divorcebefore 1909Oscar Martin Mercer and Hannah Swisher were divorced before 1909.
Marriagecirca 1909Oscar Martin Mercer married Mary Rosella LaBounty, daughter of Alexander LaBounty and Mary Ellen Jessup, circa 1909 1910 census lists that Oscar and Mary had been married for 5 years, and this was the first marriage for both. If Rolland Martin Mercer is Oscar Martin Mercer's son, then he was married previously. I also believe Mary was married previously. The census taker may not have asked about first marriage, and may have assumed it was the first for both. Since Mary's first child was born in 1910, I believe that they were married circa 1909.

Life EventDateDescription
Birth20 January 1861Sarah M. Zintz was born on 20 January 1861 at Muscoda, Grant, Wisconsin.
She was the daughter of Conrad Zintz and Magdalena Adams.
Marriage30 January 1884Sarah M. Zintz married Henry Hartwell Spyker, son of Reverand Simon S. Spyker and Rosanna Kiefer, on 30 January 1884 at at the residence of Chester William Davis, Ithaca, Richland, Wisconsin, Seldom has the quiet stream of social events of our peaceful neighborhood been disturbed by so huge a wave as swept over us on the evening of January 30th, on the marriage of Mr. Henry Spyker and Miss Sarah Zintz, not more on account of the high social position of the contracting parties, than on account of the social and individual worth of each. Having been reared in each other's society from infancy, they form that rare thing under the sun, a happy union, with which no one can find fault and if kind wishes of friends would do it they would be surrounded by Heaven's choicest blessings.
The ceremony was performed at the residence of Mr. C. W. Davis, at eight o'clock by Rev S. Spyker in a most solumn and impressive manner. The bride was arrayed in a brown silk made in a simple and becoming style. The groom, groomsman and bridesmaid were all elegantly and tastefully dressed. Miss Mattie Spyker served as bridesmaid and Mr. Clarence Inman, of Sauk County, as best man. Scarcely were the solumn ceremonies making them man and wife ended before the guests were agreeably surprised by a serenade from the Ithaca coronet band, and considering the time they have had for practice they did well. The boys were invited in and after the happy couple had received the congratulations of friends. All were invited to partake of one of the suppers which is a joy to behold, much more to eat. The tables fairly groaned under their load of fruits, confectionery and all manner of eatables. To say the host and hostess had done their best is to say it was grand, for "Chet" and his wife do nothing by halves. The festivities were kept up until a late hour, and continued the next morning by a reception at the groom's parents, Rev. and Mrs Spyker, where the guests were served to one of Mrs Spyker's best dinners, and anyone who has ever "broken bread" with them know it ws second to none. About sixty guests were present at both places. Taken all in all it was one of the most enjoyed and enjoyable events of a lifetime.

The chair mother is sitting in and the stand in front of her are two of the pieces of furniture that Dad had made. The white door just back of mother had 6 coats of paint and one of enamel. Mother did all the indoor painting. The woodwork was stained and polished. This house was washed away in the tidal wave at the time Mother and Leith and Nardy were drowned. 1919. Dad died July 1927.

  • On 16 November 1918 Nov. 16, 1918 Dear Iva,

Rec'd your letter and little did you expect you was sending it in a home with all the sorrow and changes we are having here. Leith's husband had the influenza but kept on working until he took cold in rain and died in a weeks time with pneumonia - Oct 20th 1918. Of course we must take her home, and at the time of his death she was sick in bed and I over them all the time. I escaped getting it until after he was buried about 3 days. Now Edgar - her oldest - is quite sick and I am to. But I haven't time to go to bed nor be sick. I began this some time ago and goodness knows when I can finish it. Edgar is so he can be around the house, but I have a very sore little finger on my right hand. They call it run around - is swollen twice its natural size and is very painful but that don't lay me aside from work. Leith expects to find work down town and leave the easy? part for me - to do the washing, ironing, cleaning - cooking sewing and mending to do for 5 - also keep the kids from the street and ect. Well hard work seems to be my luck but you don't know how I dread it, when I hear of a girl baby's death I think of my life and feel what a blessing for the child to have escaped such a life - and also know an innocent child is always saved. Well here goes another "whack" at it. My finger is some better but very painful yet. As I can't write with my left hand must make this letter short. Leith went to spend the night with a friend and Dad went shrimping and Edgar and I are alone. He is asleep. I am glad you are doing so well financially - hope you can get a home of your own. That is a splendid little picture of the baby and I guess the other one is Leith, although it doesn't look as she did 2 years ago. I am glad to get it anyway. I should say you did get a bargain on that bedding - wish we got one like it. My hand hurts to I'll stop and write a letter when it gets well. It's very warm and flowers are in bloom - grass is green. It's beautiful this time of year. How do you feel after the war? I was so glad and cried. Wonder when Bruce will come back.

    With love, Mother

    Newspaper Report of Storm:
In early September, 1919, a tropical storm formed over the north Atlantic Ocean, swept its destructive force across the Caribbean Islands of Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas, and slammed into the coast of Texas, just south of Corpus Christi. The hurricane, known later as the "Corpus Christi Storm," clocked 72 miles per hour and covered major parts of the city with a 10-foot tidal wave. The bodies of hundreds of people, as well as the bodies of cattle (from nearby Mustang Island), floated into the city and points north, resulting in severe sanitation problems. According to early accounts, more than half of the bodies found were buried without identification. An estimated 2,287 people were killed, and property damage was extensive.
