McClain is shown as age 15, born in Wisconsin in May 1885, and attending school in the 1900 U.S. Census for Meade County, South Dakota(Volume 11, SD 1, ED 34, Sheet 7, Line 29). He is living with his parents, John and Grace McClain, and four younger siblings in the second ward of the City of Sturgis, Sturgis Township, Meade County, South Dakota. The marriage certificate for John Edward McClain shows that he married Margaret Hartry at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, on Saturday, January 20, 1923, and that the marriage was registered in Moose Jaw. Both are shown as being from Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The witnesses were Gow(?) Struson (?) and Louisa Stinson, and the minister's name looks something like J. A. MacKeigan. A note on the marriage certificate from Pearl Sawyer shows the bride was Margaret Bigford. A letter dated October 13, 1999, to Susan Miller from Pearl Sawyer clarified that Margaret Bigford went to live with her oldest sister, Violet, and her husband, Samuel Hartry, after her mother died when Margaret was only one year old. They tried to adopt her, but her father would never agree to it. Throughout her childhood and school years, however, she was known as Margaret Hartry. A 1998 family record from Pearl Sawyer shows John McClain died December 23, 1960, while another family record shows he died January 23, 1960. Both records show he died in Burnaby, British Columbia. His obituary (newspaper unknown) shows he died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 75 on Dec. 23rd, 1960, in Vancouver, B.C. His death certificate from Vancouver confirms that John Edward McClain died December 23, 1960, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It shows he was 75 years old on his last birthday and that he was born in Minnesota, U.S.A. It lists his residence as 4424 Frances Street, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. A database index of Bureau of Land Management Records found on the internet in January 2000 athttp://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sd/land/perkins.htm shows that John and Grace McClain and John E. McClain (possibly their son) had five different land patents in Perkins County, South Dakota, all at the 7th Meridian,Township 018 N, Range 012 E, in Sections 8 and 9. John McClain had two homestead patents dated May 26, 1908. The one in Section 8 was for 120acres, with a document identification number 3645. The same document identification number is also referred to a homestead of 40 acres in Section 9. Document number 108181 dated February 1, 1910, is indexed to cash sales of 120 acres in Section 8 and 40 acres in Section 9 to John E.McClain. Document identification number 447193 dated December 5, 1914, refers to a cash sale of 80 acres to Grace McClain in Section 8.

Birth12 March 1836Anna Kidde was born on 12 March 1836 at Breage, Cornwall, England, also reported as 2 Mar 1836.
She was the daughter of John Kidde and Mary Ann Wearne.
Marriage30 March 1856Anna Kidde married Henry Oliver Rister at Paris, Grant, Wisconsin, on 30 March 1856.1
Death4 January 1911Anna Kidde died on 4 January 1911 at from bronchio pneumonia, Paris, Grant, Wisconsin, at age 74 Ann Kittoe was born in Cornwall, England March 2, 1836, and died in the Town of Paris, Grant county Wis., Jan. 4th 1911, aged 74 years, 9 months and 22 days. She came to this country with her parents in 1848, and settled near Hazel Green, Wis. On March 30th she was married to Henry Rister of the Town of Paris. To them were born nine children, Mary, Ida and William dying in infancy. She leaves to mourn her death, an aged husband, four daughters, and one son, namely, Mrs. George Reynolds of Georgetown, Wis., Mrs. Wm. Taylor and Mrs. Tobias Beckett of Platteville; Mrs. Edward Egan, who makes her home with her father, and John, residence near the Town of Paris. A daughter, Olive, Mrs. John Shinne, of North Dakota, died January 12, 1904 leaving a family of eight children, the youngest a babe of three months. A telegram called this aged mother to their home in N. Dakota, but when the mother had arrived there, the daughter was dead and buried, The Husband and some of the children were still confined to their beds, all having typhoid fever. The grandmother returned with three of the children. The following spring the father and four children came leaving the babe with a neighbor, where she still is. This family of seven was taken by the grandmother into her home, where she minstered to all their wants. Here was a labor of love and sacrifice for six long years, when the father remarried and took his family home. Mrs. Rister was loved by all who knew her. The example of her life will be a monument to her memory. She has gone from those she loved and has gained the reward promised to the good and faithful servant - "Enter into the joys of thy rest." Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also. There's a land far away, 'mid the stars we are told. Where they know not the sorrows of time. Farewell, dear mother-a last, a long, a sad farewell. Long and unbroken will thy slumber be.
